Video: Festival celebrates Belarus` medieval musical instrument
A festival celebrating duda, Belarus` bagpipe-like musical instrument, was held at the Minsk Concert Hall on January 26.
Medieval battles were reenacted during the festival entitled, “Legends of the Great Duchy of Litva. The ancient land,” to the accompaniment of dudas.
The instrument was first mentioned in Belarusian books in the 15th century. It became one of the most popular musical instruments in Belarus in the 19th century.
Several medieval bands took part in the festival. Dance shows were also held.
“The Belarusian duda was very popular in the Middle Ages,” said Aryna Velesh, author of the project. “Troops marched to duda music to the Battle of Grunwald, for instance. Dudas, pipes and drums comprise a traditional set of wartime instruments found on old engravings.”
Bagpipe-like musical instruments are common not only in Belarus and elsewhere in Europe but also in Africa and Central Asia, she said.
