Prominent Belarusian singer-songwriter Zmitser Vaytsyushkevich played a gig in Mahilyow on February 15 in defiance of the local authorities’ ban on the show.
At his concert for St. Valentine’s Day, Mr. Vaytsyushkevich played, along with love songs, his hits.
The show was initially scheduled to take place at the Mahilyow Regional House of Culture, but the local office of the Francisak Skaryna Belarusian Language Society, the organizer of the event, received a few days ahead of it a letter from the authorities saying that the show had been banned.
A local NGO called Kola Syabrow hosted the show at its office. It attracted an audience of 80 people.
Mr. Vaytsyushkevich, who was a member of the campaign team of opposition candidate Uladzimir Nyaklyayew in the December 2010 presidential election, is rumored to be on authorities’ blacklist of Belarusian and foreign musicians and cultural figures known for having spoken out for democratic change in Belarus and for the release of political prisoners.
