Opposition leaders on Thursday held roundtable conference of solidarity with independent labor unions
Repressive measures against the Belarusian Union of Electronic Industry Workers (BUEIW) are authorities’ revenge for the union’s active involvement in this past spring’s protests against a so-called parasite tax, says a resolution that was adopted at the meeting.
“The dictatorship is afraid of mass demonstrations expected this fall and purges the political scene [of opponents],” says the resolution, which was signed by, among others, Uladzimir Nyaklyayew, Anatol Lyabedzka, Yuras Hubarevich, Alyaksey Yanukevich, Paval Sevyarynets, Vital Rymashewski, Iryna Veshtard, Andrey Bandarenka and Ilya Dabratvor.
“Belarusian independent labor unions’ leaders Henadz Fyadynich and Alyaksandr Yarashuk and the unions’ activists were questioned in Minsk on August 2,” the resolution says. “The police raided the unions’ offices in Minsk and Salihorsk. We, representatives of pro-democracy political parties and human rights organizations of Belarus, view the repressive measures against the independent labor unions and the criminal prosecution of their leaders as acts of lawlessness, intimidation and violence.”
“We believe that this is a politically motivated case and demand that Ihar Komlik, chairman of the Minsk city organization of the BUEIW, be released and the criminal case against the independent labor unions be dropped,” the resolution says.
The resolution calls on Belarusian people to join the campaign of solidarity with the independent labor unions and suggests that the international community “immediately make it a condition for a dialogue with the Lukashenka regime that political prisoners should be released and political repression in Belarus be stopped altogether.”
