Video: UN works to make world a safer place, representative says

The United Nations takes efforts to make the world a safer and better place, Sanaka Samarasinha, the UN Development Program (UNDP)'s resident representative in Belarus, told reporters in Minsk on October 24.
The United Nations marked its 69th anniversary on Friday.
Mr. Samarasinha noted that Belarus was among the founders of the international organization and played a key role in its activities.
"It is an organization that is currently providing food to over 80 million people in 90 countries. It's helping about half a billion rural people to get out of poverty. It's saving three million lives of children by vaccinating over 60 percent of the world's children," he said.
"We are helping to prevent conflicts through diplomacy, through elections. In fact we are helping 60 countries with elections."
"The United Nations keeps the world relatively safe, tries to make the world a better place for all of us. But it is very important to understand that the United Nations is all of us. It's your organization as much as it is mine. So let us wish ourselves a happy birthday. There's much to celebrate but a lot of work to be done," said Mr. Samarasinha.
