EU provides €160,000 for installing GSM-R equipment on Minsk-Vilnius trains

By Tanya Korovenkova, BelaPAN
Minsk, 14 January. The European Union has provided €160,000 to Belarusian Railroads for installing GSM-R equipment on the locomotives of Minsk-Vilnius trains.
The new international wireless communications standard for railroad communication and applications will be introduced on the route within the framework of a 2007-2013 program of cross-border cooperation between Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus financed by the European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI), the main financial and cooperation instrument through which assistance is given to the Eastern Partnership participating countries and Russia.
A total of 34 locomotives will be outfitted with GSM-R devices in the first half of 2015. They will be manufactured by Belarus’ AAT Ahat-System and will be used for communication between train and railroad regulation control centers.
In 2010, Belarusian Railroads and Lithuanian Railroads launched a joint project aimed at establishing a high-speed passenger service between the capital cities of Belarus and Lithuania. The duration of the one-way trip has been reduced from four to two and a half hours as a result of the first two stages of the project. The project has now entered its third stage.
