Interior ministry waiting for EU funding to start establishing accommodation centers for illegal migrants

By Vyachaslaw Budkevich, BelaPAN
Minsk, 1 March. The Belarusian interior ministry is waiting for the European Union's funding to start establishing accommodation centers for illegal migrants, Minister Ihar Shunevich told reporters in Minsk on February 28.
The minister said that the centers would be run by the interior ministry. "We have already picked suitable facilities," he said. "We are waiting for funding. They will start operating in 2018 at the earliest."
Mr. Shunevich stressed that the centers would be used to accommodate exclusively illegal migrants, not refugees. The centers are needed to improve the conditions in which illegal migrants are kept as they await deportation, he said.
It was announced in January that the European Commission would provide €7 million to Belarus to help it establish accommodation centers for illegal migrants. The news caused an uproar in the Russian media, which alleged that Belarus was going to build camps for refugees deported from the European Union.
The allegations have been repeatedly denied by Belarusian authorities.
