About 1,000 people took part in a demonstration staged Sunday in Orsha, a city of about 120,000 residents some 125 miles east of Minsk, in protest of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s Decree No. 3 that imposed a so-called parasite tax on non-working people.
The demonstration began with a rally in Lenin Square at 1 p.m. amid a heavy police presence.
The crowd chanted, “Scrap your decree outright cause you are the main parasite!”
Protesters marched in a procession to the building of the Orsha city government. A member of the city council went out to invite people in for conversations, but he was shouted down by the crowd.
A statement was read out demanding that Mr. Lukashenka step down and his notorious decree be revoked.
