The Homyel Regional Court on April 11 started hearing a murder case against an 18-year-old man who is accused of stabbing a school teacher to death.
Uladzislaw Yurchanka is believed to have attacked the 43-year-old woman, a Belarusian language and literature teacher, outside her house in the village of Sharpilawka on the night of October 17, 2016.
The young man, who was in a state of alcohol intoxication, reportedly hit the woman 27 times with a hunting knife. The woman died at the scene.
Uladzislaw was 17 at the time of the crime.
According to the prosecution, Uladzislaw murdered the woman because he owed her some money for an angle grinder that he had stolen from her.
The woman’s common-law husband told reporters before the hearing that he would like the young man to be sentenced to death.
He claimed that his wife had taken pity on Uladzislaw and had not told the police that he had stolen her angle grinder and scooter.
The accused has previous convictions for theft and alcohol abuse.
