Two teachers of General Education School No. 11 in Maladzyechna went on trial on Tuesday over the death of a student in a potato field in the Maladzyechna district, Minsk region, last year.
Volha Zavadskaya, a 33-year-old French teacher, and Iryna Apanasevich, a 45-year-old physics teacher, are accused of negligence that led to the death of 13-year-old Vika (Viktoryya) Papchenya.
If found guilty as charged, the two women may be sentenced to up to four years in prison each.
On September 29, 2016, Vika got under the wheels of a MAZ truck while she and her classmates were picking potatoes. She died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.
On December 23, 2016, a judge of the Maladzyechna District Court found the 22-year-old driver of the MAZ truck guilty of causing death by careless driving and sentenced him to three years of “restricted freedom”.
The fatal accident occurred when the students should have been at school.
The children were reportedly assigned to pick potatoes after the head of the Maladzyechna District Executive Committee ordered schools in the district to help local agricultural companies.
