The centenary of the so-called October Revolution, the overthrow of a provisional government in Russia by a coup d’etat on November 7, 1917, was marked by a flower-laying ceremony at the statue of Vladimir Lenin (Ulyanov) in Minsk’s Independence Square on Tuesday morning.
Belarus is the only ex-Soviet state where this date continues to be observed as a public holiday.
More than a thousand people attended the 15-minute ceremony, which featured a military guard of honor and had been organized by the pro-government Communist Party of Belarus (CPB). Flowers and wreaths were placed at the foot of the statue. The crowd displayed Belarus’ state flags, as well as Soviet Union and CPB flags.
