Video: Monument to Thaddeus Kosciusko unveiled in Brest region

A statue of Thaddeus Kosciusko was unveiled Saturday in front of the Kosciusko family estate at Merachowshchyna in the Ivatsevichy district, Brest region.
Belarus’ first monument commemorating Thaddeus Kosciusko was made and put up with funds raised on the crowdfunding platform on the initiative of civil society activist Hleb Labadzenka.
More than $12,000 was donated in a couple of months, Mr. Labadzenka told BelaPAN.
“History is being made before our eyes and by our hands,” he said. “The name of Koscuisko was tabooed in Belarus in the Soviet era, but now we are commemorating him with a monument. Today is a great day for us. Koscuisko is a person who unites people with different political views.”
Writer and historian Uladzimir Arlow said at the ceremony that he was dreaming that a monument to another national hero, Kastus Kalinowski, would be put up in Minsk.
About 500 people attended the ceremony, including House of Representatives members Alena Anisim and Anatol Tkachuk; Alyaksandr Hrytsuk, head of the Ivatsevichy District Executive Committee; Elizabeth Lewis, first secretary of the U.S. Embassy in Minsk; and prominent opposition politicians Paval Sevyarynets and Ryhor Kastusyow.
