Video: Nobody wants to push Belarus out of Russian dairy market, ambassador says

Nobody wants to push Belarus out of the Russian market by banning imports of its dairy products, Aleksandr Surikov, the Russian ambassador to Belarus, told reporters in Minsk on Friday.
According to Mr. Surikov, he does not like it when Russia’s Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Monitoring Service (Rosselkhoznadzor) imposes a ban on imports of all Belarusian dairy products rather than on imports of products made by specific companies in response to specific violations of safety standards.
At the same time he said that he supported both Belarusian and Russian food safety watchdogs.
According to Mr. Surikov, Belarus produces seven million metric tons of milk, while Russia produces 30 million metric tons of milk. “De facto we consume 37 million tons [of milk] and need to consume 41 million tons,” he said. “It means that Russia is short of four million tons of milk. The shortage is partially offset by imports of high-quality cheese…But we need to produce 15 million tons of milk more. So what are we doing? It is necessary to increase our output.”
Mr. Surikov stressed the importance of supporting domestic manufacturers and ensuring that their products meet safety standards.
He said that, in his view, Rosselkhoznadzor’s latest ban on imports of some types of Belarusian dairy products violated the Treaty on the Establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union.
He said that it was necessary to take into account the strategic partnership between Belarus and Russia while deciding on whether to impose a ban or not.
“I know that our new Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Gordeyev is expected to meet with Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Mikhail Rusy in Moscow today. They will probably resolve the issue in principle,” Mr. Surikov said.
