A judge of the Pershamayski District Court in Minsk on July 4 sentenced Mikalay Statkevich to a fine of 980 rubels (some $490).
Judge Yury Harbatowski found the prominent Belarusian opposition leader guilty of violating regulations governing “mass events” for calling for participation in an unauthorized demonstration.
In a Facebook post published on June 21, Mr. Statkevich called on people to gather near a memorial to World War II Soviet soldiers on Talbukhina Boulevard on July 3 for a demonstration marking the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Minsk in order to “express solidarity with the generation that liberated the world from Hitler’s rule and with those who fight now for the liberation of the country from the rule of his supporter.”
About 30 people were arrested during a police crackdown on the demonstration.
Mr. Statkevich was apprehended as soon as he left home to go to the venue of the event.
He was taken to a detention center and told that he had to complete a 10-day jail term that he had been given in connection with an unauthorized demonstration staged in late 2017.
After Mr. Statkevich was brought to the courthouse the following day, he refused to attend his trial and demanded that he should be taken back to the detention center.
“I don’t want to take part in this disgraceful farce in which a person is tried for an attempt to lay flowers at the grave of soldiers,” he exclaimed.
The judge announced his decision in the absence of Mr. Statkevich.
The opposition leader was transported from the courthouse to the Pershamayski district police station where he was notified of the fine imposed on him and released.
