Maryna Zolatava, editor in chief of tut.by, and a number of other suspects in a so-called BelTA case were released from a detention center in Minsk on Thursday evening and night.
Those included Maryna Zolatava, editor in chief of tut.by; tut.by editors Hanna Kaltyhina and Halina Ulasik; tut.by reporter Hanna Yermachonak; and Alyaksey Zhukaw, an editor with the online newspaper Belorusy i Rynok.
The BelTA case was opened after the Belarusian government’s news agency BelTA had complained about the use of its paid information products by unauthorized people.
Investigative actions have yielded evidence confirming reports that were grounds for instituting criminal proceedings under Article 349 of the Criminal Code, which penalizes “unauthorized access to computer information,” the Investigative Committee said on Thursday.
According to the Investigative Committee, Ms. Zolatava confessed that tut.by journalists had illegally used logins and passwords for a long period of time with her consent for the purpose of gaining unauthorized access to BelTA’s paid information services.
"Owing to circumstances that were established during the investigation and the fact that Maryna Zolatava was a company official, her conduct was found to fall under Part Two of Article 425 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, which penalizes deliberate inaction by an official,” the Investigative Committee said.
According to the Committee, since Ms. Zolatava provided active assistance in the investigation, it was decided to release her from custody.
In addition, following the required investigative and procedural actions, it was decided to release Hanna Kaltyhina, Halina Ulasik, Hanna Yermachonak and other suspects in the case, the Investigative Committee said.
“The investigation into the case continues,” the Committee noted.
