A bribery case against Alyaksandr Byaletski, a former non-staff chief orthopedist with the Belarusian health ministry and ex-director of the National Research and Practical Center for Orthopedics, started to be heard at the Minsk City Court on February 11.

According to the prosecution, Mr. Byaletski accepted three bribes from Barys Ranchynski, director of Mediasfera, in exchange for awarding equipment repair and maintenance contracts. In particular, Mr. Byaletski reportedly received $1,000 from Mr. Ranchynski in 2016, €1,000 in 2017 and €2,000 in 2018.

In addition, Mr. Byaletski is alleged to have accepted $3,000 from a representative of Belreamed in 2017 in exchange for timely paying for laboratory analyzers.

Mr. Byaletski, 61, was arrested by the KGB in June 2018.

The man was initially placed in a detention center but moved to house arrest in January.
