A judge of the Frunzenski District Court in Minsk on Wednesday sentenced Alyaksey Yaskow, a former head of the defense ministry’s Military Medicine Directorate, to nine years in prison on charges of bribery and abuse of power.

The 44-year-old Yaskow was also sentenced to a penalty of 12,700 rubels ($6,050) and property confiscation and stripped of his military rank of colonel.

Mr. Yaskow, who headed the directorate from April 2015 until his arrest in mid-2018, was found guilty of receiving at least $18,000 in bribes from Geol-M, a private supplier of medical equipment, in exchange for lucrative contracts.
