Many memorial crosses at a so-called people’s memorial at Kurapaty, a Stalin-era mass execution site just outside Minsk, were pulled down by order of authorities on Thursday morning. At least 15 people who attempted to protest were arrested by police.

Workers toppled 70 crosses that were put up last year on the perimeter of the site by Zmitser Dashkevich and his associates last year.

The 5-meter high crosses were pulled down by employees of the Barawlyany forestry organization, which is in charge of the Kurapaty forest, with the help of a tree harvester machine, amid a heavy police presence.
