Scores of people prayed Sunday in central Minsk for the preservation of a so-called people’s memorial at Kurapaty, a woody place just outside the Belarusian capital where thousands are believed to have been executed by the NKVD secret police in the 1930s and 1940s.

On April 4, workers demolished some 70 memorial crosses at Kurapaty, sparking protests at the site. At least four opposition activists were held in a detention center after being arrested at the site.

Some 200 people took part in a prayer meeting outside the Russian Orthodox Church’s Holy Spirit Cathedral while about 20 people prayed in front of the Roman Catholic Church’s Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary a hundred meters away.

Both prayer meetings were led by Father Vikentsiy, of the Belarusian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
