Thousands of Catholic pilgrims from Belarus and other countries attended an annual religious festival held on July 5 and 6 in Budslaw, a village some 90 miles north of Minsk, in honor of a famous miracle-working icon.

The Budslaw Mother of God Icon was brought to Belarus in 1598 as a gift from Pope Clement VIII and was put on display at the Bernardine Church in Budslaw in 1613. It is said to have worked more than 40 miracles, including healings, ever since.

Catholics from Belarus and other countries flock to Budslaw every year to celebrate the anniversary of the icon’s coronation (July 2, 1998).

The tradition of pilgrimage to Budslaw was renewed in 1992, when the Mother of God Icon was declared the patron icon of Belarus by the pontiff.

Last year the Budslaw festival was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
