New death sentence handed down in Belarus

Minsk, 30 July. A new death sentence was handed down in Belarus on July 30 after a panel of judges of the Vitsyebsk Regional Court found 50-year-old Viktar Pawlaw guilty of murdering two elderly women in late December last year.

According to the prosecution, Mr. Pawlaw, who had a previous conviction for murder and was released from prison in 2015 after spending 10 years in prison, beat the two sisters, aged 76 and 78, to death with a stick in their house in the village of Prysushyna near Vitsyebsk on December 30, 2018.

The bodies of the two victims were found on January 3.

The murderer reportedly left with about 150 rubels in cash, two bottles of wine and some other items.

Mr. Pawlaw, who had had no permanent job since his release from prison, had helped the two women with housework.

His trial began on June 24.

The accused said in his final statement that he was regretting what he had done and begged the court not to sentence him to death.

This is the second death sentence in Belarus since the start of 2019. On January 9, a panel of judges of the Mahilyow Regional Court sentenced 36-year-old Alyaksandr Asipovich to death for brutally murdering two young women in July last year.

The two women, aged 26 and 27, were found dead in an apartment in Babruysk on July 20. One of the victims was stabbed to death and the other woman was killed with a hammer.

Belarus is the only country in Europe where the death sentence remains a sentencing option and prisoners are executed.

More than 400 people have been sentenced to death and executed in Belarus since the country acquired independence in 1991. Alyaksandr Lukashenka is known to have pardoned only one death row inmate.

As many as four inmates were executed in Belarus in 2018. Two convicts are believed to have been executed this year.
