Video: Foreign Minister Makiej says that Lukašenka may visit EU member country this year

Belarusian Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makiej told reporters on Monday that Aliaksandr Lukašenka might visit a member country of the European Union before the end of 2019.

“When the time comes, he will pay a visit,” he said. “Wait. You’ll learn about this later. There will be a visit later on. I hope there will be a normal, full-fledged visit, including to the EU, this year.”

Mr. Makiej said that he could not understand why so much attention was paid to the issue of Mr. Lukašenka’s visit to the EU.

“We have always said that there should be no visit just for the sake of it,” he said. “There can be a visit – and this is our fundamental approach – when it is well-prepared and when we expect it to yield specific important results with regard to the expansion of trade, economic, political and humanitarian cooperation and so on. A visit is not an aim in itself. We should carefully prepare any visit in order to get results important for Belarus and our partner country.”

When asked if Mr. Lukašenka’s potential visit to the EU had anything to do with the possible signing of visa facilitation and readmission agreements between Belarus and the EU, Mr. Makiej said that “this is a question to put to our European partners.” “We are generally ready to sign them, but we are waiting for a reply from our European partners,” he said. “When we receive a signal that they are ready to sign [the agreements], then we will discuss when and where this should be done.”
