In pictures: Opposition forces’ presidential primary meeting held in Viciebsk

More than 100 local people attended a primary meeting held in Viciebsk on March 7 for the purpose of selecting a single candidate of five major opposition organizations – the Movement for Freedom, Belarusian Christian Democracy, the United Civic Party, the Hramada Belarusian Social Democratic Party and the Belarusian Popular Front – for this year’s presidential election.

All the five nominees for the role were present at the meeting, which took place at a hotel.

Those included Mikalaj Kazloŭ, acting chairperson of the United Civic Party; Paval Sieviaryniec and Voĺha Kavaĺkova, co-chairpersons of Belarusian Christian Democracy; Juraś Hubarevič, leader of the Movement for Freedom; and Aliaksiej Janukievič, deputy chairperson of the Belarusian Popular Front.

All people with passports confirming their being local residents were able to cast votes in the primary during the meeting.

As many as 101 people took part in the vote. Of them, 66 voted for Mr. Seviaryniec.

The 10-week voting tour of Belarus’ provinces for the purpose of selecting pro-democracy forces’ single candidate began with a primary meeting in Haradok, a city of 12,000 residents in the Viciebsk region, on March 6.
