Opposition activist Filip Šaŭroŭ partially admitted his guilt on the first day of his trial in a Minsk court on Monday, according to a human rights group called Pravavaja Inicyjatyva (Legal Initiative).

The 25-year-old member of the Malady Front (Young Front) opposition youth organization is answering a criminal charge of hooliganism for putting blood red paint on the hands of a statue of 19th-century Russian poet Alexander Pushkin in Minsk, painting a white-red-white flag on a memorial to police officers fallen in the line of duty and daubing “1937” on the wall of a water pumping station in Baraŭliany, a city some five kilometers north of Minsk.

The trial will continue on Tuesday.
