Hundreds of people gathered at the center of Minsk on Thursday evening for a demonstration in support of Viktar Babaryka following the news of the arrest of the presidential hopeful and his son Eduard, who headed his nomination group.

The demonstrators formed a line along Independence Avenue, Minsk’s main thoroughfare.

The spontaneous demonstration took place while three other presidential bidders – Voĺha Kavaĺkova of Belarusian Christian Democracy, Juraś Hubarevič of the Movement for Freedom and Mikalaj Kazloŭ of the United Civic Party – were collecting ballot-access signatures in the area.

Police officers in uniform walked along the line of demonstrators and warned people through megaphones that mass events other than the collection of signature were not allowed in the area.

The silent demonstration lasted for more than six hours.
