At least nine journalists were arrested by police outside the headquarters of the Committee for State Security (KGB) in central Minsk on Tuesday.

The journalists had gathered at the site to cover a visit to the headquarters by Maryja Kaliesnikava, a representative of the camp of now-disqualified presidential contender Viktar Babaryka. They were apprehended by officers of the city police’s AMAP (special-task) unit for “document checks” before the activist’s arrival.

Those arrested included BelaPAN reporter Zachar Ščarbakoŭ and cameraman Siarhiej Saciuk, as well as representatives of, Belsat TV, Reuters and Russia’s Tass news agency.

The journalists were brought to the Zavodski district police station on the outskirts of the Belarusian capital. They were released some 30 minutes later.
