Dozens of people were brutally arrested during an opposition protest in Hrodna on Sunday.

Thousands took part in the so-called March of Heroes to protest the official results of last month’s presidential election in which Aliaksandr Lukašenka was given a landslide victory.

The protesters started to gather on Savieckaja Street at about 2 p.m. They were holding white-red-white flags and chanting “Long Live Belarus!”, “We believe! We can! We will win!” and “This is our city!”. There were employees of chemical company Chimvalakno among the protesters. The Chimvalakno workers were wearing their work clothes.

When the demonstrators were walking in a procession along Horkaha Street, prisoner vans and police minibuses drove up them and about a hundred police officers emerged from them. The officers were dressed in riot gear and armed with rubber-bullet guns. They grabbed dozens of protesters at the end of the procession and in the nearby apartment yards and bundled them into the prisoner vans. Those arrested included men, women and elderly people. They were taken to the Lieninski district police station.
