Video: Tens of thousands attend anti-Lukašenka protest in Minsk

An opposition demonstration in Minsk on September 13 attracted tens of thousands of people for a fifth straight Sunday, as massive discontent with the official results of last month’s presidential election shows no signs of abating.

Groups of demonstrators holding white-red-white flags and anti-Lukašenka signs streamed from different parts of Minsk to Pieramožcaŭ Avenue in what was called the “March of Heroes,” while police attempted to suppress the protest by moving in on some crowds and bundling scores of people into prisoner vans.

Demonstrators were rounded up at multiple sites, but most people regrouped after being scattered by riot police and continued their march, with crowds swelling as they neared Pieramožcaŭ Avenue.

Heeding calls for marching toward Drazdy, an upscale neighborhood where many top government officials have their villas, protesters eventually flooded the avenue and were stopped by a police cordon near the Arena City mall.

Journalists said that the crowd had reached at least 100,000 people at the peak of the event.

The interior ministry’s press office said that more than 400 demonstrators had been arrested in Minsk by 7 p.m.
