Video: Some 1,000 people arrested as police disperse protesters in Minsk

Some 1,000 people were arrested as police dispersed crowds of demonstrators in Minsk on Sunday, November 8.

Many thousands of people gathered in central Minsk to demonstrate for the resignation of Aliaksandr Lukašenka and demand a new presidential election.

The anti-Lukašenka demonstration, held for the 13th consecutive Sunday since Belarus’ August 4-9 presidential election, was called a March of People’s Rule.

Just like on previous Sundays, authorities made an active effort to prevent protesters from forming a huge crowd.

As a result, there were several crowds simultaneously demonstrating in different parts of the Belarusian capital, chanting “Long Live Belarus!” “We believe, we can, we’ll overcome!” and “Go away!”

Officers of the interior ministry’s Organized Crime and Corruption Department and units of the KGB, the Interior Troops and the Special Operations Force of the Belarusian Armed Forces, and even police units from other cities were reportedly involved in suppressing the demonstrations and arresting participants.

In many instances, brutal force was used during arrests.
