Video: People in Minsk mourn violent death of Raman Bandarenka

Hundreds of people gathered in a Minsk neighborhood on Thursday night for a candlelight vigil commemorating Raman Bandarenka, a 31-year-old local resident who died after being beaten up by unknown men the previous night over white and red ribbons on a fence.

The young man was brought to a hospital in critical condition an hour and a half after the incident.

According to neighbors, Mr. Bandarenka was beaten up and taken to a police station after he went out and entered into an argument with a group of masked men in civilian clothes who had arrived in vans with tinted windows to remove the hundreds of white and red ribbons forming Belarus’ historically national white-red-white flag on a fence in the so-called Square of Change, the inner yard of a quarter of high-rise apartment blocks on Čarviakova Street.

The young man was in coma when he was being taken to the surgical unit, according to a source at the Minsk Emergency Hospital.

He reportedly had traumatic brain hemorrhage, subdural hematomas, bruises and scratches.
