Dozens of people were arrested in Hrodna on November 15 as riot police dispersed a demonstration commemorating Raman Bandarenka, a 31-year-old Minsk man who died on November 12 shortly after having been beaten up and taken to a police station following an argument over white and red ribbons on a fence.

Up to 400 people turned up at a makeshift Bandarenka memorial at the site where the Blessed Virgin Mary Church once stood. They chanted “Long Live Belarus!” and “I am going out” (Mr. Bandarenka’s last text message).

Dozens of men in black and khaki uniforms without insignia started to grab demonstrators. A scuffle broke out, and teargas was used, prompting some of the demonstrators to leave.

According to human rights defenders, a total of 66 people were arrested.
